后海是什刹海的组成部分，是13世纪元大都规划的基本项目之一，由前海、后海、西海三块水面组成的什刹海，与北海、中海、南海“前三海”区别，被称作“后三海”。后海东起地安门外大街，西至新街口大街，南起平安大街，北至北二环，总面积146.7公顷，水域面积34公顷，绿地面积11.5公顷。这是北京城内700年以前元大都时期的古老水域。

Houhai is an integral part of Shichahai and one of the basic projects planned by the Great Capital of the Yuan Dynasty in the 13th century. To distinguish from the "three seas in the front" of Beihai, Zhonghai, and Nanhai, Shichahai, which consists of three parts of water surface, Qianhai, Houhai, and Xihai, is called the "three seas in the back". Houhai starts from Di'anmenwai Street in the east, extends to Xinjiekou Street in the west, starts from Ping'an Street in the south, and extends to the North Second Ring Road in the north, with a total area of 146.7 hectares, 34 hectares of water area and 11.5 hectares of green space. This is the ancient waters in the capital of Yuan Dynasty 700 years ago in Beijing.
